What is a postpartum doula, and what does one do?

The first 6 weeks hold some of the most important days after having a new baby. They can also be home to some the most difficult. Even for the more experienced parents, every postpartum period is different from the last. Bringing home a new baby means changing routines, dividing time, & just trying to figure out how to do it all.

If the concept of a postpartum doula is foreign to you, you are not alone! However, there is an obvious need for more support during this period & research shows that moms, dads, & babies have an easier time with this transition if a good support team is in place. The term doula comes from a Greek word, meaning one who serves — this is where I come in.

As a postpartum doula, I provide various services to mother the mother & nurture the entire family, ensuring you all receive the rest & support you need during the transition into life with a newborn. My job is to help lessen the everyday burdens while you focus on caring for what’s most important — yourselves & your new baby. Outside of daily tasks, I will provide as-needed guidance for basic newborn care. This includes education or assistance with baby bonding, infant soothing, feeding, diapering, & bathing.

I am also happy to offer support to aid in your emotional & physical recovery from birth as well as simply provide a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen. Additionally, I can connect you with others within our community for needs that are currently outside of my realm. This includes lactation assistance, motherhood or lifestyle coaching, counseling, pelvic floor therapy, chiropractic care, & more.

Essentially, whatever your family’s needs may be during this time, I am here & happy to serve you!

Not just a newborn thing!

While my primary focus for postpartum support is surrounding families during the first 6 weeks following birth, I love to serve families at any time during the entire first year of life. Postpartum is multi-faceted. For some, it may come as a challenge initially that gets easier with time. While for others, it is breeze in the beginning with the obstacles not appearing until several months down the road. My main goal + focus is to support the mother & the family, period.
